After 18 years of experience in the international fashion industry Vishal Mawandia felt saturated of the women’s wear market. Wanting to bring international fashion consciousness to India, Zegdo is his foray into Made to Measure and bespoke fashion for men.
Coming from the stable of Vineetaz Exports one of India’s leading suppliers to high street brands like Zara, Mango, Pull and Bear, Massimo Dutti, Vishal has seen men’s fashion evolving very closely. ‘When I would travel to meet my buyers in Europe and America I would be amazed by the variance in the dressing styles of men. Men were fashionable and did not dress in shades of black, blue and grey. Over these years of observing change, I feel the Indian man is now ready to step out of the conservative into expressing his individual style.’
Launched in October 2015 Vishal says the ride has been exciting he feels men still want the safe colours, they are ready to try something new. ‘Our jacket linings are a huge hit. From cartoons and graffiti to loud colours and shapes they allow the wearer to be safe yet expressive.’ Vishal has also noticed a dearth of good styling ‘It is shocking the number of times a customer wearing an ill fitted shirt insists on stitching Made to Measure into those measurements. A large part of what we do is educating men on the nuances of a good yet comfortable fit. With Indian businesses increasing their global presence all over the world there is no excuse for our men to not be dressed sharp and suave and to project the same level of sophistication as their international counterparts.’
Zegdo caters to the discerning seasoned traveller. ‘A lot of our customers have their shirts tailored in Florence and shoes crafted in Italy. Saville row is where they go for their suits and depend on high-end ateliers to put together the rest of the trimmings. We want to bring the best of there to the best of us. I want my customer to get all that right here in the comfort of his home. Zegdo is selling high fashion convenience.’
Zegdo has a wide variety of fabrics to choose from: suits start at Rs35,000. Everything is customized and made to measure. The range covers everything a man’s wardrobe needs from business wear, occasion wear to leisure wear. Each customer is treated to individually and by appointment only. Customers can choose to come into the conveniently located Nariman Point studio or can have the team come to them. ‘When a customer is with us, it is like a doctor’s appointment. No one disturbs. Our clients spend 3-5 hours organizing their wardrobes for a business trip or a wedding. This is men getting their retail therapy.’
Our team had a great visit discussing everything from sports to fashion while sipping on a cool drink and getting ourselves measured. Finally going to the
shops was not a painful experience. Zegdo is the epitome of a man’s den and like Vishal said “Fashion is like flowers, you gotta keep it fresh!!”.
